LG's rollable OLED TV could be on sale as soon as 2019

While we were holding out for LG to formally unveil their first commercially available rollable television display - likely at the CES 2019 convention in Las Vegas - new reports support the idea that the innovate new panel will be on sale within the next year.

A source close to the matter reportedly spoke to Bloomberg, confirming that LG planned to start selling the rollable 65-inch displays in 2019. The sets are able to unfurl at the touch of a button, and can adjust to various heights depending on the aspect ratio of the content being displayed.

While OLED (organic light emitting diode) panels are still significantly more expensive than LED sets, the flexible organic film OLED is made of is far more conducive to being flexed or rolled in different ways, creating a lot of new hardware possibilities.

A roll new world

We first got a glimpse of the technology at CES 2018, though it was only on display, with no promise of when it would release to market. A report by Engadget, though, claimed to have seen 'internal documents' relating to LG's presentation at the Las Vegas convention, which sees consumer tech manufacturers the world over come together every January to showcase their latest wares.

While we've seen working demos of the technology, there's been no word on when this innovative hardware could actually come to market. But with another high-profile presentation of the rollable display lined up, the smart money's on LG getting ready to unleash the panel technology on the world.

It's clear the company has big plans for including more flexible displays across a range of devices - even if plans for a LG foldable phone have seemingly been delayed.
